SWEET SOUBRETTE TO PERFORM IN ALBANY
Change of Venue: NYC Ukulele-Powered Indie Rock Band to appear at Valentine’s instead of Savannah’s
Sweet Soubrette, a NYC-based ukulele-powered indie rock band, released its second album, Days and Nights, in January with a show that filled NYC’s Bowery Poetry Club to capacity. Now Sweet Soubrette is touring the Northeast U.S. in support of the new record. Seven dates are confirmed in April 2011, including Albany on April 18. The Albany show was originally planned for the Dublin Underground/Savannah’s, but will now take place at Valentine’s, also featuring local act Gay Tastee.
Sweet Soubrette features the songwriting, vocals and ukulele of Ellia Bisker, whose dark, edgy love songs have captured fans' hearts and critical praise since 2006. After an unusual debut in the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, Sweet Soubrette quickly took off in the NYC independent music scene, followed by festival appearances including CMJ, the Berkshire Fringe, and the Paris Uke Fest and international tours in France and Italy.
With the release of 2008’s Siren Song (MH Records), Sweet Soubrette’s distinctive songs of doomed romance began earning increased attention from reviewers and fans, and the album received high rotation on national college radio. Time Out NY described it as "at once sweet and sassy, celebrating reckless behavior with a charmed wink." The Deli said it was "almost impossible to stop replaying in one's head after hearing."
Since the release of Siren Song, Sweet Soubrette has expanded to include a talented backing band. Violinist Heather Cole began classical training at age four and has studied bluegrass, klezmer, and Irish fiddle. Bassist Bob Smith toured with the band Trunk Federation in the 90s and now directs a public school music program. Drummer Mike Dobson attended Mannes College of Music for percussion and plays in symphony orchestras and professional circuses. This unique combination of talents led to the rich arrangements on Days and Nights.
Days and Nights is seductive, humorous, and devastating, covering subjects ranging from gold diggers and other dangerous women to troubled love in all its permutations. Catchy melodies and witty lyrics combine with a dark sensibility to create a sound that has been compared to Amanda Palmer, Rilo Kiley, and the Magnetic Fields.
"What makes a Sweet Soubrette? One part circus performer, one part poet, and third part rockstar…a Sweet Soubrette show is like badass adult story time." -CultureMob
"Take Amanda Palmer covering Radiohead and then take Phoebe Legere and drain out the jazz and replace it with Jenny Lewis circa The Execution Of All Things and then throw on some fishnet stockings and you have Sweet Soubrette.” -Rock NYC
